<b><span style="font-size: large;">Remember What Is Amazing </span></b></div>
<div style="color: #9fc5e8; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">About Chitterlings and What Isn't</span></b></div>
<br />
The genius of black creativity has often involved making something good of the scraps - creating a delicacy out of undesirable, discarded parts. Sometimes, though, we get so excited about the resilience and transformative power of black people's creativity that we confuse the creative energy and talent with the creative output. In hip hop this has meant reveling over the ingenuity of hip hop's creative genius for using scraps from the urban landscape to make music - presenting exhilarating dances on cardboard in the street, reusing obsolete technical-trades equipment to rebuild stereos, telling stories on street corners in ways that made people in corporate offices listen - while at the same time ignoring the toxic conditions under which such creativity occurs.<br />
This confusion between the genius of remaking and the final product reminds me of chitterlings. There is a crucial distinction between the genius behind turning pig guts into a grassroots delicacy and the actual chitterlings themselves...food that slave owners and their families would not eat. So, no matter how well they were prepared, no matter how much creative efficiency surrounded previous decisions to eat intestines, ears, hooves, and other animal parts, the context for African Americans' use of chitterlings-or chitlins as they are affectionately called - symbolizes not just black people's resilience, tradition, and creativity but also their mistreatment. <br />

In 1939, psychologists and married team, Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark conducted a series of experiments examining race and self-perception. <b><a href="http://geecheenotes.blogspot.com/2012/08/blackamerican.html" style="color: #0b5394;">Blackamerican</a><span style="color: #0b5394;"> </span></b>children were taken from both segregated and integrated schools and presented with two identical dolls to select from. The only distinguishing features between the dolls was that one was brown with dark hair and the other was white with yellow hair. The Clarks documented how the children responded to the following list of requests: </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
* Show me the doll that you like best or that you’d like to play with</div>

The Clarks found that children from segregated schools were more likely to select the white doll as the nice one, thus signifying, in their estimation, internalized racism and self-hatred. Their studies later contributed to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to end racial segregation in public schools. </div>

<b><span style="color: #674ea7;">Gee Chee's View:</span></b> Speaking as a parent, there were times when I misread and wrongly classified my son's actions and rationale. As sincere guardians & protectors with the best of intentions, we can sometimes dissect and over analyze a child's minor infraction with our own convoluted politics. That said, employing the use of doll tests to quantify "self-perception" is a mighty bold investment to place in analogy. I would argue that a doll is a reflection of what's popular in the toy market before taking it to psychology. Perhaps there is some merit. I haven't delved deep enough into the Clark's argument so I'm not completely dismissing their studies, however I'm not ready to bust through a brick wall holding some Clark Kool-Aid either. I've reached no definite conclusions on this matter but in light of
today's research documenting the effects of psychological persuasion,
I feel the "Clark doll" conversation needs to evolved. We shouldn't forget that popular culture, marketing strategies and consumerism play a significant role in psychological influence and how we are persuaded to process and interpret our world.<br />
If a child chooses an orange basketball over a black basketball, I wouldn't read a subconscious rejection of blackness or an analogy for self-hatred but rather an impulsive choice made between one anomalous object and one normalized object. Orange basketballs are associated with abundance, popular basketball icons and standard NBA professional equipment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ezXnrR-2gTg/UDU1n1iA4nI/AAAAAAAAAIU/PTdklVMKZz4/s1600/Jordans.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ezXnrR-2gTg/UDU1n1iA4nI/AAAAAAAAAIU/PTdklVMKZz4/s320/Jordans.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In this case, what chance does a black basketball have against an orange ball in the hands of a levitating Jordan, immortalized on the shoe tongues of the mythological flying carpet called Nikes? Most of us adults buy into marketing strategies, propaganda, profit prophets etc., yet a seven year old's inability to respond as a counter culture rebel to a white doll is defined as a reflection of what stirs in the inner recesses of the mind? Could it be that children are also a target demographic just as adults are? <br />
<br />
A generic white doll could at least be associated with popular film and sports icons. What do you connect a generic black doll with? Black children selecting a white doll over a black one could be more about the expectations of what a doll is suppose to be as oppose to a reflection of oneself. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRCS2qJiXAs/UCF5LLLdq-I/AAAAAAAAAHE/stbKweD1KDA/s1600/blackgirlwhitedolls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRCS2qJiXAs/UCF5LLLdq-I/AAAAAAAAAHE/stbKweD1KDA/s320/blackgirlwhitedolls.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The white doll has already been established as normal. It's used in advertisements, story books, film, everything. I did an experiment with myself. I made myself imagine the color of a teddy bear then I Googled it. The majority of images that came up turned out to be just as I pictured in my head, a brown bear. You see some white bears, hardly any black bears and perhaps some blue or red bears etc. So if I were to give a black child a choice between a brown teddy bear and a white teddy bear and that child chooses the brown one over the white one, would this indicate a measure of self-pride or what's normalized?<br />
<br />
Likewise, don't just give black children an anomalous black doll and a normalized white doll to choose from, give them an anomalous black doll with a narrative that would give them reason to make a transition. Take the Clark experiment to 1984 when the Michael Jackson doll was released two years after the Thriller album and MJ was still at the height of his success. At it's peak the album sold one million worldwide per week. Today it's still holds the record for highest album sales. Gather children from all over the world of 1984 and give them a choice between the Michael Jackson doll and any white doll and I bet the majority would've chosen the MJ doll.Not only that they might even show up with one white glove on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--1L1a8rQ_7I/UDTlEgQhSmI/AAAAAAAAAIA/BfjSC22v_SU/s1600/6rhe6d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--1L1a8rQ_7I/UDTlEgQhSmI/AAAAAAAAAIA/BfjSC22v_SU/s320/6rhe6d.jpg" width="295" /></a></div>
</div>
<br />
The only way an uncommon doll can beat out one that's normalized is if it holds a narrative, it must be prepackaged with a mythology, it must be aesthetically intriguing. That is what the MJ doll was charged with. Michael Jackson could flip a coin in a <a href="http://geecheenotes.blogspot.com/2012/08/blog-post.html?zx=c67a4d56547fc83b" style="color: #ffd966;">homeless man's cup</a><span style="color: #ffd966;"> </span>transforming his tattered clothing into a white tux. Everything he touched magically became illuminated. At the sight of a full moon he could <a href="http://geecheenotes.blogspot.com/2012/08/blog-post_22.html" style="color: #f1c232;">turn into a werewolf or lead a horde of zombies in a mausoleum mambo</a>. Jackson could <a href="http://geecheenotes.blogspot.com/2012/08/blog-post_1448.html" style="color: #f1c232;">defuse gang rivalry</a><span style="color: #f1c232;"> </span>with a leg snap-twist and flashing his jacket open with the semblance of a silverback's pectoral poundings. This is the narrative encapsulated in a MJ doll. This is what any normalized white doll would have to compete against. Significance and relevance will usurp the throne of the unexceptional.<br />
<br />
GCV would like to extend a Clark Cartoon experiment that I conducted on my own son, Shogun Raygun (not really his name). Take into account Kirk and Spock's normalized heroic whiteness and compare it to the black alien anomaly Mace Windu. Share it with your children. Do you think the choice was made based on pigment or aesthetic?<br />

<h2>
<span style="color: #9fc5e8; font-size: x-large;">Arnold Schwarzenegger versus Sergio Oliva</span><a name='more'></a></h2>
</center>
Sergio Oliva also called "The Myth" because of his unbelievably huge
size (he was 5'10" and 240 lbs) was the top bodybuilder in the late
1960's, he won the Mr. Olympia in 1967 and 1968. But then along came
Arnold Schwarzenegger a young upstart from Austria who was arrogant
enough to think he could beat anyone. <br />
Many still feel that Sergio and Arnold are the greatest bodybuilders of all time.<br />
But which one was really the best?<br />
They clashed for the Mr. Olympia title three times:<br />
The first was the 1969 Mr. Olympia where Sergio the defending
champion beat Arnold and won his third consecutive Mr. Olympia title.
Even Arnold, agreed Sergio was the best that day and was such a good
sport that he kissed Sergio on the cheek to congratulate him.<br />
Next was the 1970 Mr. Olympia. Arnold had moved to America with the
help of Joe Weider and worked hard for a full year with no other purpose
but to defeat The Myth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4UPEZIC0W3g/UEVqlq8oOWI/AAAAAAAAALw/leL9tWKLHSk/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="397" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4UPEZIC0W3g/UEVqlq8oOWI/AAAAAAAAALw/leL9tWKLHSk/s400/5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
At this contest many felt that Sergio came in a
bit too smooth while Arnold had much more definition and hardness then
the year before. Arnold beat the champ and took away his Mr. Olympia
crown that day. <br />
The last battle was at the 1972 Mr. Olympia in Essen, Germany. Sergio
no longer underestimated Arnold, he trained hard and came in huge and
tight, with a tiny waist and all other bodyparts as big as Arnold's
despite being 4 inches shorter. Arnold many years later in an interview
admitted that if he was the judge he would have given the title to
Sergio that day. But it was not to be, Arnold won his third Mr. Olympia
beating Sergio in what many felt was a controversial victory. Was
Arnold, really better? Or did he psych Sergio out? Was it that back in
the 1960's the German people would not have accepted a black man beating
an Austrian? <br />
Look at the above picture and you be the judge.<br />
All I can say is that I wish I could have been there to witness those
contests featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger vs Sergio Oliva, in my mind
they are both
the top bodybuilders of all time.<br />

"I was restored to consciousness by
the dashing of cold water in my face, and found myself leaning against my
brother's arm, while he bent over me with streaming eyes. He afterwards
told me he thought I was dying, for I had been in an unconscious state
sixteen hours. I next became delirious, and was in great danger of
betraying myself and my friends. To prevent this, they stupefied me with
drugs. I remained in bed six weeks, weary in body and sick at heart. How to
get medical advice was the question. William finally went to a <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I7p_X164nK8/T4w1qpRsnWI/AAAAAAAAAAM/sj6Lb04KOMA/s1600/Picture+1.png"><b style="color: #274e13;">Thompsonian doctor</b></a>, and described himself as having all my pains and aches. <br />
<a name='more'></a>He returned
with herbs, roots, and ointment. He was especially charged to rub on the
ointment by a fire; but how could a fire be made in my little den? Charcoal
in a furnace was tried, but there was no outlet for the gas, and it nearly
cost me my life. Afterwards coals, already kindled, were brought up in an
iron pan, and placed on bricks. I was so weak, and it was so long since I
had enjoyed the warmth of a fire, that those few coals actually made me
weep. I think the medicines did me some good; but my recovery was very
slow. Dark thoughts passed through my mind as I lay there day after day. I
tried to be thankful for my little cell, dismal as it was, and even to love
it, as part of the price I had paid for the redemption of my children.
Sometimes I thought God was a compassionate Father, who would forgive my
sins for the sake of my sufferings. At other times, it seemed to me there
was no justice or mercy in the divine government. I asked why the curse of
slavery was permitted to exist, and why I had been so persecuted and
wronged from youth upward. These things took the shape of mystery, which is
to this day not so clear to my soul as I trust it will be hereafter" Gee Chee Visionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02448713749831227258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8532633858207568258.post-21526950427938882012012-08-26T07:13:00.001-07:002012-09-04T18:09:28.822-07:00<div style="color: #660000; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Here’s the rest of my 1989 interview with Ice Cube, in which he tells the story of a gig in Detroit that got <i>waaay</i> out of hand...<br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: arial;"><b style="color: #073763;">DAVID MILLS:</b>
Was there any element of anticipation that N.W.A. would get a lot of
publicity by being extra hard and extra profane and extra violent?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">ICE CUBE:</b>
Nope, ’cause to us it ain’t extra. If you go onto any kind of
playground – elementary – you’ll hear the same words we talk about in
our songs. If you turn on any kind of cable TV, you’ll hear the same
words.<br /><br />We didn’t invent no words. We ain’t teaching nobody
nothing new when it comes to that. They can’t blame us if their kids use
profanity. They can’t blame us for no crime rate in no city, because
there’s always been violence and there’s always been crime, wherever
there’s people together. ...<br /><br />Next album, we’re just going to do the record. No press, no nothing.</span></blockquote>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: arial;"><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b> Really? You’re tired of all the media attention?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
Yeah, to be honest. Ain’t nobody caused no riot and said, “Yo, N.W.A.
made me do it.” At our concerts, a little thing happened in Detroit,
which was the police’s fault.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b> Tell me
about that. Because I talked to your tour promoter here in D.C., and she
said N.W.A. had agreed not to perform “Fuck tha Police” onstage because
it could incite people. So y’all didn’t perform “Fuck tha Police” until
you get to Detroit. Somebody starts singing “Fuck tha Police,” and the
promoters stop the show, turn up the house lights and pull y’all off
stage.<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b> That ain’t the way it happened. For
one thing, we ain’t sign no agreement to not do “Fuck tha Police.” My
signature, my manager’s signature, or Eazy’s signature ain’t on nothing.
They can’t show you that shit.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b><span style="color: #073763;"> </span>Did you agree verbally not to perform that song?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
We agreed verbally not to perform the song. [Some venues] didn’t want
us to sing “Gangsta, Gangsta” or “Straight Outta Compton” [either]. We
was like, “Fuck that.” The kids come to see this shit, you know?<br /><br />So
we go into Detroit, right? It’s our last show of the tour. Twenty
thousand people there. Eazy done went platinum, we done went platinum.
The show list is De La Soul, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, L.L. Cool J,
Eazy-E and N.W.A.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b><span style="color: #073763;"> </span>Hell of a show.<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
Hell of a show. [But the concert organizers said] “Yo Eazy, man, y’all
got to go on second.” We ain’t been in Detroit since the records came
out. The last time we were in Detroit, all we had was 12-inches out.<br /><br />So we’re like, “<i>Second?</i>
Why the fuck we got to go second? We been burnin’ ass on this whole
tour.” So we’re like, “Yo, man, they’re trying to fuck us, man, putting
us on second.”<br /><br />We usually don’t beef about going on second, but
we see everybody else beefin’ and getting their way. Why can’t we beef
and get our way, right? Like, “Fuck it, we ain’t going out if we gotta
go on second.” ’Cause when we go on, we want everybody to be in there.
We don’t want no half shit. Not being big-headed, because this is the
first time we ever pulled some shit like this. We usually say, “First or
last, we gonna tap that ass.” That’s the motto we got.<br /><br />So we was
like, “Fuck it, man, we should do ‘Fuck tha Police.’ It’s our last
show. Let’s just go out with a bang.” Kids was coming to us in the hotel
all day – “Yo, man, y’all singin’ ‘Fuck tha Police’?” We say, “Naw.”
“Oh man, y’all shouldn’ta come if y’all wasn’t gonna do that!”<br /><br />Our
manager said, “Just go on second, man.” We’re like, “Cool. Straight.
Fuck it.” It was an 8:30 show. We was going on at 9 o’clock, so we
figured, you know, by 9 o’clock everybody’s in there that is in there.<br /><br />So
we’re backstage. It’s like, “Yo, man, should we do ‘Fuck tha Police’?”
Nobody said yeah and nobody said no. Then we heard our cue so they ran
up onstage, Ren and Dre and Yella. They go out first. To me, if nobody
said yeah and nobody said no, we ain’t gonna do the song. That’s what
I’m thinking. “I guess we’re going to do the regular show as planned.”<br /><br />So
it’s my turn to come up there, and I do “Gangsta, Gangsta.” Kids go
crazy. After I finish “Gangsta, Gangsta,” after the lights go out and
the music cut off, you hear the kids chanting: “Fuck the police! Fuck
the police! Fuck the police!”<br /><br />Then I go into “A Bitch Iz a
Bitch.” After I finish that, I stop. “Fuck the police! Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!” That’s all you hear the kids chanting.<br /><br />After
that, we went into “Straight Outta Compton.” After we finished that, the
same thing: “Fuck the police! Fuck the police!” I went into “I Ain’t
the One.” While I was doing “I Ain’t the One,” Ren and Dre was at the
turntable talking. So after I finish “I Ain’t the One,” I announce
everybody, right?<br /><br />Now I’m about to go into “Dopeman,” as far as I
know. But Ren said, “Wait a minute.” He goes to the front of the stage.
He says, “Everybody say, ‘Fuck the police!’ ” They say “Fuck the
police!” to the loudest they can.<br /><br />I looked at Dre; Dre said,
“Come in on two.” So I went into the song – “Fuck the police, comin’
straight from the underground...” The place went stupid.<br /><br />Then we see about 20 motherfuckers from the back trying to bum-rush the front.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b> Just fans or who?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
Undercover police. They’re in the back of the arena, but they’re
throwing chairs out the way to get to the front of the arena. Nobody
knows they’re police, not even me.<br /><br />Then I’m thinking, “Damn, we
done started some shit in here.” I didn’t know what was going on. I’m
still singing the song but I’m still looking at ’em, because they leave
the lights on in Detroit.<br /><br />So they’re trying to climb over the
barricade. As soon as one tried to climb, I saw his badge. I’m like,
“Damn, that’s the police!” But I’m still rappin’. And security is
fighting the police because they don’t know they’re police. They just
think they’re motherfuckers acting a fool.<br /><br />While this is going
on, we hear two pops. Pop! Pop! So I’m thinking, “Oh shit! The police
shootin’ at us!” That’s my first thought. So me and Ren just run off the
side of the stage, we run to the back, I change my shirt, and I’m
looking for an exit.<br /><br />By this time, backstage is going crazy. The
police is fighting L.L.’s security, police is fighting the building
security, just trying to get to us. Our road manger pushes us in a van.
“Go to the hotel, pack your shit. The police goin’ crazy. We’re leaving.
We’re going to Canada.” So I’m like, “Bet. Let’s go.”<br /><br />So we get
to the hotel and we start packing our shit. We’re ready to break. While
we’re taking our shit down to the bus, the lobby is full of police. Full
of ’em – “Y’all goin’ to jail.” That’s what the police said.<br /><br />So...
they took us into this little room. All they did was talk to us. They
told us they wanted to arrest us onstage to front us off in front of
everybody to show that you can’t say “Fuck the police” in Detroit.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b><span style="color: #073763;"> </span>That’s what they said to you?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
Yeah. So that was it. They took down our numbers and addresses and said
we’d be getting a letter, and if they wanted to prosecute we’d have to
send some money back or some old weak bullshit.<br /><br />So I’m like, “Man, y’all did all this shit...” They did all that just to talk to us and say they didn’t like the record. ...<br /><br />If
we wouldn’t have heard those pops – which sounded like gunshots, but
they said some kids were popping firecrackers – if we wouldn’t have
heard that shit, we wouldn’t have ran. Yo, when I hear shots, I’m gone.
Because you can’t miss a target with a spotlight. (<i>laughs</i>)<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b> The police tried to rush the stage just to make a point in front of all the fans that you couldn’t say that in Detroit?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
Yeah. So they started the fuckin’ riot. They started the trouble. We
only had one more verse to go and that song would have been over. Kids
didn’t go kill police.<br /><br />I’m like, “Y’all gonna make the
motherfuckers fight because they didn’t get to see Eazy. That’s what
y’all gonna do.” So that was the shit that happened, man.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b>
But doesn’t that just go to show you? You must have realized something
if you had agreed verbally not to do that song in any of the other
cities.<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b> Some people, they were saying, “If
you do the song, y’all never be able to come back to this building
again.” So you can’t burn your bridges. But it was a spur-of-the-moment
thing. You know, you just do shit spur-of-the-moment. You’ve got to take
it how it comes.<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b> Does that mean you will never play Detroit again?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
I don’t know. From what I know, if we can’t play Detroit, the kids’ll
come to Saginaw to see us. The hip-hop audience is a loyal audience. I
know that for a fact. ...<br /><br /><b style="color: #073763;">MILLS:</b> Is there a lesson – What’s the lesson you learned from that whole incident?<br /><br /><b style="color: #7f6000;">CUBE:</b>
Have a faster getaway. That’s the only shit I learned. Have a faster
getaway. I don’t respect the Detroit police no more than I respect the
L.A. police or anybody. Police, they’re just people, just like I’m
people.<br /><br />I told the Detroit police, “Yo, y’all want to do a song
called ‘Fuck N.W.A.’? We’ll produce it. We don’t give a fuck.” Nobody
wanted to do it, so I’m like, “Well, y’all had your chance.”</span>Gee Chee Visionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02448713749831227258noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8532633858207568258.post-73581183230644578532012-08-23T02:05:00.000-07:002012-08-23T02:12:12.712-07:00<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

"Though health professionals often blame high-fat, high-calorie fast food
for contributing to Americans' expanding waistlines and related health
woes, <b style="color: #6fa8dc;">more than one third</b><span style="color: red; font-size: 130%; font-style: italic;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></span>of the nation's leading hospitals <b><span style="color: #6fa8dc;">have fast-food restaurants on their premises.</span></b> <span style="color: red; font-size: 130%; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"></span><br />

A
study done earlier this year found that nearly 40% of hospitals said
they had fast-food franchises on their main grounds. Several hospitals
actually contracted with two chains simultaneously.<br />
In addition, one
medical center reported a fast-food chain in one of its associated
hospitals. And another hospital that had closed a fast-food restaurant
in 1999 subsequently opened up a hospital-owned restaurant with a
similar menu.<br />
<br />
Most of the fast-food restaurants mentioned in the
survey were burger chains such as Hardee's, Wendy's and McDonald's.
Others had pizza franchises and one had a Subway.<br />
